Udavilla Bentsen (ne: Crowe)

Udavilla Crowe was the sister of my great grandmother, Annie White (ne: Crowe).

Udavilla was born in NS on July 15, 1894 to Mary E and Thomas Crowe.

The 1901 census shows [Udavilla], 6 living in Rossland with her family: Mary E, 29, Thomas, 30, Annie, 7, George H, 5, Thomas C, 4, Gertrude M, 2, and Henry Morrell, 54.

The 1911 census shows [Udavilla], 16 living in Rossland with her family: Elizabeth Mary Crowe, 40, [Harry] George, 15, Clarence Thomas, 14, May [Gertrude], 12 and David [Tamdin], 1.

Records show that Uda Villa Crowe married Samuel Henry Lane on March 11, 1912 in New Denver. Uda would have been 18 years old.

Records show that Udavilla and Samuel had a daughter, Mary Ethel Lane who was born in Spokane, WA in 1916.

Samuel and Uda relocated to Washington State for a time.

This is a shot of my mother, grandmother, Udy and Uncle Ben in Beaverdel, BC around 1952.

Records show that Villa Crowe married Olaf Stub Bentsen (b. 1880 from Bornhom, Denmark) in 1934 in Vancouver. She would have been 40 years old. He would have been 54. Olaf Bentsen died in Kelowna in 1959 at the age of 79.

Records shows that Udavilla Bentsen was on the voters list in 1974 in Kelowna.

Udavilla Bentsen died at age 93 in Duncan, BC on June 21, 1988.

Udavilla's daughter, Mary Ethel Lane Bentsen married Percy Sorbin Ross in Alert Bay in 1934.

Records show that Samuel Lane returned to Ontario.

  5. Hi folks I am the Nova Scotia side of this tree, my great grandfather was Udavilla's mother's brother. He remained east when the father, Henry Fountain Morrell, and daughter Mary son in law Thomas Crowe & kids, along with daughter Susan & son in law George William Crowe (brother of Thomas Crowe) along with daughter Agnes, and son Martin Morrell all moved west to BC, we assume chasing the gold as they were iron and coal miners here in Nova Scotia. Eventually Henry Fountain Morrells wife Hannah (Legget Morrell followed but I cannot find her on a census in BC or NS after 1891, her death is recorded in BC in 1918 however, Fascinating information...can you email me? or call me? 902-752-5771 (Thanks) incerely Bob

  8. Did our best to find out more about Samuel
Henry Lane but we reached a dead end. I know that until my mom applied for her Passport certificate to travel overseas, she never knew nor did grandma bentsen ever talk about Mary’s kids actual birth grandfather. That was the way it was long ago: dont ask/dont tell. I think its an intriguing mystery for our branch of the family, but my older brother Ken already did a family search through ancestry.ca and it didnt tell whatever happened to him. Maybe some day :)

  9. Hi Mike

Not certain if this is accurate but worth checking out....Bob

Samuel Henry Lane was born on March 13, 1876, in Waterloo, Ontario, the son of Emma and Edward. He married Udavilla "Udie" Crowe on March 11, 1912, in New Denver, British Columbia. They had one child during their marriage, Mary Ethel. Samuel Lane was on the draft list for WWI for Clatsop, Oregon USA. Udavilla remarried to Olaf Bentsen. Samuel Lane died on December 18, 1946, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at the age of 70, and was buried there.

  10. Fantastic, Bob!!!! This is very satisfying to have it confirmed. I have aleays wondered if Samuel had other kids and what his life was like. We also found a document in which his ethnicity was declared as being partly first nations, what may now be referred to as metis perhaps. I love a good mystery! Thanks for contributing this information!

  13. Just to clarify, do you want the current family tree branches, like my bro's and sis's and their kids and grandkids. etc or are you talking more about the earlier branches? This part of the family is pretty big!

  14. Well, I have worked backwards, sideways and current on mine, so yes any complete family connections are welcome....I am just amazed I found this blog and you folks.......I had a piece of paper from the early 70's when I started to do family tree research for a school project while in Grade 9....it had the name Aunt Udie (Udavilla) lives in BC written on it...the rest of the page was blank because no one knew anything...40 years later with the aid of the internet I correspond with her grandkids....this is amazing.

Either my grandfather or his half sister told me about Udavilla, ( so it came from oral family history) but no one had any other details, I have worked for years on other braches of the family tree then I circled back about a month ago and did some serious digging on my grandfather Morrell's side. I have now found all of the original members that went west from Nova Scotia chasing the gold. They were all iron or coal miners here in Nova Scotia.

Once I found Mary & Thomas Crowe and the 1901 census showing my great great grandfather Henry Morrell as a lodger, I quickly figured out that was his daughter and son-in-law and they had a child Udavilla then I began searching Udavilla Crowe and BOOM last week up comes this blog by Gary Carre with all of this information...unbelievable!

Of the original family Henry Fountain Morrell and his wife Hannah along with children Mary, Susan, Thomas, Martin, & Agnes along with Mary's husband & kids and Susan's husband & kids (Mary & Susan married brothers Thomas Clarence & George William Crowe) all moved west to BC some time after August 1898, two remained in Nova Scotia James "Clifford" Morrell and family stayed in River Hebert, and my great grandfather Henry Morrell Jr and his family stayed in Stellarton. Three were deceased (Annie died young, George died at 15 in Torbrook, and Lucy died at 22 in Bridgeville) not sure what happened to Lucy's husband and two sons yet....

So my great grandfather Henry Jr was Udavilla's mother Mary's brother, his son was my grandfather Alfred Sanford Morrell born 1903 and Alfie's daughter is my mom, Dorothy 'Jean" (Morrell) Boardway...my mom is also still alive she is 86 and she knew very little of this part of her father's family history but is quite keen to learn more!

Do you have any idea when the Morrell's headed West or by what means, it would be quite a trip for a large family like this (I estimate minimum of 18 went Henry Hannah & children Thomas(16), Martin (15) & Agnes (10), Mary & Thomas Clarence Crowe with 6 children, Susan & George William Crowe with 3 children)....did they work their way across the country, travel by rail go atdifferent times, men go first then sent for families???etc...and how did they end up in Rossland City?

Any info you may have would be great...

    Thanks so much for responding

  16. Travel party update

Can now confirm at least 21 travelled west as I found Lucy Morrell's widower and sons on the 1901 Rossland BC Census. His name was John Louis Keefe (O'Keefe) from Cork, Ireland he and Lucy were married in March 1892 in Torbrook NS had two sons James Henry and John Louis 'Luigi' Lucy died in 1897 in Bridgeville NS, (still have to check cemetary before snow flies) he then married an Ada Belle Henderson in BC they had a son George E D Gregory Keefe born sometime in 1899 they left for Arizona/California in 1904 with their family another child born in 1902 in Phoenix BC?? then the next child is born in May 1904 in Arizona. He died in 1956 in California

Original thoughts below can be updated to 21 travellers between Aug 1898 and sometime in early 1899 for travel date
(I estimate minimum of 18 went Henry Hannah & children Thomas(16), Martin (15) & Agnes (10), Mary & Thomas Clarence Crowe with 6 children, Susan & George William Crowe with 3 children)....did they work their way across the country, travel by rail go atdifferent times, men go first then sent for families???etc...and how did they end up in Rossland City?
