The Morrells

Henry Fountain Morrell and Hannah Morrell (ne: Leggett) (my great great great grandparents) were from Nova Scotia.

The 1891 census shows a large family with 9 children living in Upper Londonderry, Colchester County: Henry, 43, Hannah, 48, James C, 23, Mary E, 20, Susan E, 18, Lucy, 16, Henry, 14, George, 12, Martin, 10, Thomas, 8 and Agnes, 3.

In the later 1890s, Henry and Hannah left Nova Scotia and came to Rossland, BC. They would have been in their 50s at that time.

The 1901 census shows Henry, 54, living with his daughter, Mary and her family, in Rossland.

The 1911 census shows and Henry, 58 and Hannah Morrell, 65 living in Rossland.

Henry and Hannah died in Rossland in 1918/19.

Some of Henry and Hannah Morrell's children came to BC with them-
  • Mary E Morrell married Thomas Crowe in Colchester County, NS in 1889 (see Mary Crowe below).
  • Susan Morrell married George W. Crowe in Torbrook, Annapolis County, NS in 1894. George W. Crowe died in Vernon in 1951 at age of 81.
  • Martin Steven Morrell, b. 1884 in Nova Scotia, m. Clara Dora Furst in Rossland, BC in 1909, d. in Vernon, BC in 1951. Clara Morrell died in Vernon in 1957.
  • Thomas Morrell died in Rossland, BC in 1905.
  • Agnes Morrell, married John Luke Bean in Rossland in 1908 and William Wallace Dixon in Nelson in 1916.
At least 2 of their children stayed in Nova Scotia.
  • James Morrell (b. 1898) married Letitia Jane Rushton in 1894 and lived in River Hébert, NS in coal mining all his life (d. 1984). James and Letitia had a son, James Woodbury Morrell. Brenda Woodworth is a descendant.
  • Henry Morrell married Mary Edith Silver in 1910 and lived in New Glasgow, NS.
It is not clear whether Lucy and George stayed in Nova Scotia or came to Rossland.

Me and Colleen

Colleen's great grandmother, Gertrude May and my great grandmother, Annie Eliza were sisters. That makes us third cousins. Gertrude and Annie were born in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia to Mary (ne: Morrell) and Thomas Clarence Crowe.

Annie Eliza married Richard White in 1911 in New Denver, BC. Gertrude May married William George Crocker in Silverton, BC in 1914.

The two families grew up in the Nelson area of the Kootenays.

Here is a picture of my aunt Pat, my grandmother, Dorothy, my great grandmother Annie, and her sister, Udi.

And here is a picture of my and my great grandmother, Annie with me and my brothers.
